Solar Parcel 1 – HK & Iceland Solargraphy Exchange Project 2012-2014

About Project

The interaction happened through hand-made camera, unique photography technique and hand-written postcards, presenting the exchanges of culture and images between Hong Kong and Iceland. Images, as a form of memory and record keeping, are also a medium for art and cultural exchanges.

In 2013, Fotologue Culture curated “Solar Parcel” – Hong Kong and Iceland Solargraphy Exchange Programme. As the first exchange programme, we linked up between Hong Kong and Iceland, two places with variations in many ways. In Hong Kong, four secondary schools with 59 students from different communities participated. Meanwhile another 57 participants from Verkmenntaskólinn á Akureyrir (Vocational College of Akureyrir) and the community in Ólafsfjördur Fjallabyggd from Iceland joined this exchange programme.

From December 2013 to October 2014, a series of pinhole photography workshops were conducted in Hong Kong and Iceland to teach the participants about Solargraphy, a special way to create artworks through pinhole photography and hand-made cameras. Furthermore, they exchanged with their partners overseas through sending each other their hand-made cameras attached with written creative postcards. The participants from both places made their pinhole cameras with cultural-specific containers from their living places, and they designed their own story-postcards as well. They received the camera from the other side and used it to take solargraphy in their own place. As a result, the cameras and postcards became a medium for exchanges between two places. Participants from Hong Kong and Iceland thus used the cameras from their counterparts to take photos, then share the image made and stories between them.
